More and more New Zealanders are detoxing their lives – and their armpits – and trialling natural deodorants in place of the chemical laden, synthetic fragrance heavy, big-brand antiperspirants, which normally contain aluminium. It’s great to see people making a change for good, and as you can tell by our best-sellers list, natural deodorants are simply flying out the door at Oh Natural!

Our best natural deodorants; as ranked by our customers

Looking for an effective natural deodorant that really works? If you’re searching for an aluminium free deodorant, the odds are you have tried a range of natural deodorants from herbal deodorants to the various crystal antiperspirant stones, roll-ons and crystal deodorant sticks – and none of them have been as effective as you hoped.  We’ve been there! That’s why we went on a mission to find aluminium free, paraben free deodorants that really work – and we’re delighted to share our most effective natural deodorant finds with you!

Top Tips to get the best from your Natural Deodorant

We’ve gathered a few tips along the way, with help from our amazing Oh Natural customers. Here is what we have learned:

  1. Detoxify

It can help to begin by detoxing your pits. Yes, really! All those years of chemical deodorants mean many people’s armpits are loaded with heavy metals, toxins and impurities that haven’t been able to escape. Using Earth’s Purtities Detox-a-Pit helps cleanse and purify your armpits, and can neutralise the effects of alcohol, food, stress and pollution.

  1. Select a scent

Our top selling natural deodorants offer a range of scents from softly feminine (Schmidt’s Rose & Vanilla or Little Mango Geranium) and girly boho (Black Chicken) to limey (Woohoo Wild) and minty fresh or masculine cedar – from Charcoal to Pineapple, there’s a scent you’ll love to wear. Maybe choose one hard working fresh scent for sports and a softer fragrance for work and nights out? Either way, you can relax in the knowledge that there are NO synthetic fragrances in our range of natural deodorants.

  1. Small is beautiful

If you choose a natural deodorant in a pot or jar, use the back of your nail to scoop out a piece just smaller than your nail. Split it in two and apply.

  1. Smooth it

Gently smooth the natural deodorant into your skin. If it’s a stick deodorant, this is done for you, but otherwise just gently rub it in with soft circles the way you would body cream. Stick to the under-arm area and don’t spread it too far and wide. Rubbing it in well means it lasts longer, works better and will leave less on your clothes.

  1. Washable

Natural deodorants come away easily with warm water and soap in your normal shower. If you do notice a mark on white shirts, a warm wash should remove this also, it’s likely to be just a smidge of coconut oil from the natural deodorant.

Enjoy peace of mind knowing you smell just great, and your body is free from nasty chemicals. It’s the best of both worlds!

How to apply natural deodorants for the best effect

What is the best natural coconut oil deodorant?

Most of our chemical free deodorants are coconut oil based pastes, including our bestseller, Black Chicken Axilla. The Schmidt’s natural deodorant brand or The Dept of Soul offer coconut oil deodorant sticks which are a good option if you don’t want to apply your deodorant with your fingers, and comes in a range of yummy scents, ideal for both men and women.

What is the best chemical free deodorant for men?

Guys are buying the Dept of Soul and Schmidt’s natural deodorant sticks which come in a range of very manly fragrances including Bergamot & Lime, Lemon & Cedarwood, Cedar & Juniper, Tea Tree – or unscented. Aluminium free, cruelty free, vegan and healthy – that’s good deodorant. The Earth’s Purities chemical free deodorant for blokes has myrtle, lavender, frankincense, bergamot and petit grain, for a more floral and complex masculine scent.

What if you have a reaction to a natural deodorant?

1. Choose a natural deodorant for sensitive skin

We have a range of natural deodorants for sensitive skin including Soapwallah, Black Chicken, Dept Of Soul #7, It’s All Good Terra and Earth’s Purities, and WooHoo Wild has good feedback as being gentle on sensitive skin. Sometimes people react to the baking soda in the aluminium free deodorants, so brands with a lower level may be best for you.

2. Use Earth’s Purities Detox-a-pit

Often the reaction calms when the follicles in your armpit are detoxed. When switching to non toxic deodorants, at first people can encounter odour, excessive sweating, rashes, redness and irritation. This is generally caused by the health of your armpit rather than the deodorant. After using antiperspirants for years, our sweat glands get blocked and our system gets loaded with toxins, heavy metals and impurities which have no way out. Using a natural deodorant can let those toxins escape but they can cause irritation and even pain as they do. Detox-a-Pit does just what it says, quickly clearing up the toxins in your armpit for healthy irritation free pits!

3. Wash before bed

Rinse your deodorant off with a gentle soap and cloth, and pat dry before going to bed.
