As I'm now three weeks into no-poo-dom (not shampooing my hair, in case that sounds weird), I thought it was high time to post a brief update on how things are going...
The Pros...
- I am LOVING not having to wash my hair! I don't think I realised quite the extent before that I procrastinated and despised the whole process. Sounds crazy and I'm sure those blessed with nice, manageable hair just wouldn't be able to understand, but the whole washing, combing, and drying (oh the drying! It takes forever!) process can feel like such a burden sometimes...
But so far that's about the only pro.
The Cons...
- The itch. Yes, I thought it would come and it did. Every few days my hair gets particularly itchy. When I 'wash' it, i.e. get it wet, it seems to ease the itch for a few days. That sounds kinds gross now it's in writing...
- The look. Yep, looks as greasy as I expected... for about the top half of my hair - then extra dry and fluffy for the rest of the length... go figure! But in a way it kind of just looks like it's got a serum or oil in it when it's tied up?
- And I can only tie it up. It's not fit to be left out. It looks bad. But tied up suits me - I can ignore it that way.
- The abundance of 'weird bits' when tied up. I don't really know how to describe it but those bits of hair that lurk under the surface when you tie your hair up, then spring up in a weird arc like fashion at any moment from the meant-to-be-flat-bit. Does that make ANY sense!?
- The feel. Ugh, running my hands through my hair just doesn't feel nice, So heavy and oily.
Some Other Stuff
- I've heard that when a lot of people try the no shampoo thing they replace shampoo with washing their hair with baking soda and rinsing with Apple Cider Vinegar. I've actually decided to not even do that as I figure it's effectively the same as cleaning your hair, just not with shampoo, and thus interfering with the whole 'self-cleaning' theory. Plus I'm not a fan of the smell of vinegar! So basically, my hair is getting wet in the shower and nothing else
- If you are going to try the no 'poo thing and are worried about the knots - you have GOT to invest in a Tangle Teezer (pictured above right). I say invest but they are only around 10 bucks and they are seriously amazing! In fact, I think everybody should buy one, even if they aren't doing the no 'poo thing. My hair is thick, long and wavy and I used to spend about 15 minutes trying to comb out the knots after washing it. This thing may look like a dog grooming brush, and I don't know how it does it, but it just glides through my hair first time (wet or dry)! Combing my hair with this takes under a minute so to me that's pretty life-changing... basically between this and not washing my hair I have sooo much time on my hands hehe!
Okay... so that wasn't so brief after all.
But for all the cons, I have reason to believe that with perserverance this process might still pay off! I don't wash my sons hair with anything, and it always looks healthy and gorgeous. And I've recently been enlightened to the fact that my brother never washes his hair... and it looks alright - even if a little on the scruffy side of surfy (and not a look I can pull off!) So we'll just wait and see... still two and a half months to go............!
