Guest blogger Alice, tries out Radiance Superfoods…

“Superfoods” is probably the biggest buzzword of 2015 and New Zealand is well and truly embracing the idea of healthy eating and naturally derived foods and supplements. I too have jumped on board and these days, I am all about kale, chia seeds and green juice! I mean, super foods for a super you, right? Well that’s my theory anyway!

The idea of superfoods may be a contemporary concept for most of us but New Zealand based company Radiance has been around since 1990. They have an extensive “superfoods” range as part of their overall natural health products offering including their SuperGreens Plus powder and their Wild Mushroom powder, both of which I was fortunate enough to sample.

Super Greens Plus powder is a high-nutrient-density green juice powder packing a punch of 81 vital ingredients in just 2 teaspoons. Rather than inundate this review with the full list, you can check out the ingredients here. You simply dissolve 10g (2 teaspoons) into 200ml-300ml of water, non-acidic juice or milk or add to your favourite shake, smoothie or yoghurt. I would probably stick with water or add to a smoothie since this powder has a tropical flavor which I don’t suspect would go well with just milk!

Super Greens Plus powder claims to provide the following benefits:
· supports relaxation and calm;
· stress management support;
· supports optimal energy levels;
· supports immune system and digestive health;
· packs an antioxidant punch equivalent to 10 servings of broccoli;
· supports alkalising of tissues – can help support joint comfort; and
· support for those who want to eat more greens but don’t like the taste!

This is a handy powder to keep around the office for a green vegetable boost. I’ve also seen cafes charge exorbitant prices for green juices and I’ve paid up to $9 for such a juice – one 100gram pouch of Super Greens Plus retails for $28.

Wild Mushrooms powder is a blend of three mushrooms: shiitake, enoki and chanterelle. Mushrooms have long been known not only for their rich, earthy, meaty taste but their health promoting benefits. Wild Mushroom powder provides beneficial plant based nutrients known to help support the health and vitality of the immune system and the body as a whole as well as being a source of Vitamin D.

THIS MUSHROOM POWDER IS SUCH A WINNER! The beauty of this product is its sheer versatility – you can quite literally add it to any savoury dish as it has such a subtle un-offensive flavor. I’ve been using it to supplement dishes containing mushroom but it can be taken daily by adding one serve (10g) to stock, soup, broths, stews, pastas, gravy, sauces, dressings, reductions, salads and stir fry’s. I truly believe that even someone who dislikes mushrooms would not be able to detect any hidden mushroom goodness.

Radiance also suggests that it can also be mixed with herbs and spices to be used as seasoning or a marinade for barbecuing, grilling, roasting meat, seafood or vegetables. You could also sprinkle on scrambled eggs or in your omelette. It can also be added to pasta dough, pastry, pizza or bread for a rich umami flavour or add into a risotto or mushroom sauce to bring a depth of mushroom goodness to any dish.

I’ve been really impressed by the Radiance products I’ve tried so far. I really want to try their kale powder and coconut water powder next! If you’ve got any super food supplement suggestions, do let me know in the comments box below.
